Hal Masonberg

Acting Coach & Industry Practitioner

Hal Masonberg brings over 30 years of experience working in the Hollywood film industry, with a background spanning casting, directing, and on-set production.

He began his career as a casting session director, working on projects such as What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, where he developed a deep understanding of how performances are shaped, guided, and evaluated in professional casting environments.

Alongside his industry work, Hal has spent decades teaching acting — including leading workshops in Los Angeles and serving as a master acting teacher for California State University’s Summer Arts Program. His teaching style is known for being clear, practical, and particularly well suited to actors at the beginning of their on-camera journey.

Hal has worked on film productions in roles ranging from First Assistant Director to Script Supervisor, collaborating with directors such as Lasse Hallström and Spike Jonze, and working closely with actors including Leonardo DiCaprio. This on-set experience informs his teaching, helping actors understand not just performance, but how film sets and auditions actually operate.

Across all his work, Hal’s focus as a teacher is consistent:
to help actors feel grounded, understood, and capable in front of the camera — without pressure, hype, or judgment.
